Pride Month Posted or Updated on 11 Jun 2026

June is Pride Month!

Pride Month is celebrated each June to honour the anniversary of the Stonewall riots, a pivotal event in the LGBTQ+ rights movement that took place in New York City in 1969. These riots were sparked by police raids on gay bars, which often resulted in instances of discrimination and violence against the LGBTQ+ community. The riots served as a catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, leading to increased visibility and activism aimed at achieving equality and acceptance. June has since become a month dedicated to celebrating the achievements of LGBTQ+ individuals while also acknowledging the ongoing struggles they face.

This month provides a significant opportunity to actively support the LGBTQ+ community by raising awareness about the unique health issues they encounter and the types of support they may require. For many, Pride Month is not just a celebration but also a time to promote discussions around mental health, sexual health, and access to supportive services tailored to the needs of LGBTQ+ individuals. Celebrating Pride fosters a sense of belonging and solidarity within the community, enhancing well-being and mental health by illustrating that there is hope and collective strength for the future.

While June serves as an occasion to acknowledge the substantial progress made toward LGBTQ+ equality, it is also essential to highlight the areas where further work is necessary. Pride Month acts as a reminder that equality and respect are fundamental rights that should permeate all aspects of life. It encourages us to think critically about how various forms of identity, belonging, and connectivity influence overall health and well-being. There is growing recognition that health extends beyond traditional clinical settings; it encompasses the everyday settings we inhabit, our social networks, and our emotional support systems.

Healthcare remains a critical area of concern, especially regarding the experiences of LGBTQ+ individuals when seeking medical care. Numerous studies have shown that many LGBTQ+ people face discrimination, misunderstanding, or exclusion in healthcare settings. These negative encounters can significantly impact both the quality of care they receive and their willingness to seek necessary medical attention.

Despite noteworthy advancements in legal protections and societal acceptance over the past few decades, research continues to highlight the disparities in health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals. Many still encounter barriers to accessing quality care, which can lead to chronic health issues, mental health struggles, and a general lack of support.

This is why we are wholeheartedly committed to promoting inclusion and advocating for equitable healthcare for all individuals. Good health and well-being are essential for everyone, and everyone deserves quality care and attention.

Let’s harness the spirit of Pride Month not only to celebrate, but to advocate for inclusive healthcare practices. We must foster environments where open, non-judgmental communication is the norm, and every person feels safe and respected while seeking care. By working together to champion these values, we can help ensure that everyone receives the quality healthcare they rightfully deserve.

How can I get involved?

Joining in on Pride Month is a powerful way to uplift the LGBTQ+ community and champion a more inclusive world. Here are some great ways to participate:

  3. Support LGBTQ+ Organisations: Consider donating to LGBTQ+ charities that support equality. Volunteer your time to help organise events that empower the community.
  4. Be an Advocate: Advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and equality in your community. Engage in discussions, challenge discrimination, and support laws that protect LGBTQ+ individuals.
