DIABETIC EYE SCREENING
Diabetes can damage your vision or lead to blindness. Diabetic eye disease often has no symptoms until it's advanced.
With early detection and treatment this can be prevented.
FREE diabetic eye screening for people with diabetes aged 12 + years
Diabetic eye screening is not the same as your regular sight test at your Opticians which you should still attend. The examination includes eye drops to dilate your pupils and digital photographs will be taken of the back of your eyes (the retina). These photographs are reviewed by accredited specialists.
For more information, take a look at our website www.ahwdesp.co.uk
If you have not received an appointment letter please contact the booking office (Monday 8am to 8pm and Saturday 8am to 12pm) on 01905 896333 or enquiries.ahwdesp@nhs.net

DIABETIC EYE SCREENING FAQs
Does my screening appointment test for Glaucoma?
The screening appointment does not test for Glaucoma.
Will I be given a glasses prescription?
During your eye screening appointment, the screener will ask you to read letters from a chart. This does not replace a normal sight test and a glasses
prescription cannot be issued from this.
Do I still need to visit my Optometrist for a sight test?
The screening does not include an intraocular pressure check or a visual field test.
Please contact your chosen Optometrist for more information about these tests.
It is recommended that everyone should have a sight test every 2 years.

SCREENING RESULTS: GRADING CLASSIFICATION
No Diabetic Retinopathy
- Images appear normal.
Background diabetic retinopathy
- small changes spotted but they aren't of concern. Sometimes features appear and disappear, so it doesn't necessarily mean there is a problem.
Diabetic maculopathy
(Routine referral)
- small changes spotted within the macular area. We will refer the patient to the hospital eye service for further investigation.
Pre proliferative diabetic retinopathy
(Routine referral)
- changes were spotted that need further investigation. We wil refer the patient to the hospital eye service.
Sight Threatening Diabetic Retinopathy
(Urgent referral)
- large changes were spotted that need prompt further investigation. We will refer the patient quickly to the hospital eye service to ensure no more damage is caused.
Non-Diabetic Eye Diseases
-occasionally during the screening test we will find non-diabetic eye conditions. We will refer patients to the hospital if needed and report our findings to your GP as they may already be aware of the condition.
Unassessable Results
-there are a number of reasons why we may get an unassessable image for example, the lens of the eye is too cloudy due to cataract. We will refer you for a Slit Lamp examination, which allows a Specialist to assess the back of
your eye.

WHAT DO MY RESULTS MEAN?
No Diabetic Retinopathy
(Images appear normal)
This is a good finding and means that on the images we assessed we could not see any features that caused concern.
Background diabetic retinopathy
(Background Changes)
This finding means that small changes were spotted on the images we assessed. However, we could not see any features that caused
any concern. Retinal features sometimes appear and disappear from year to year and do not necessarily mean things are 'getting worse'.
Diabetic maculopathy
(Routine referral)
This means that small changes were found on the images within the macular area. Accordingly the patient will be referred, for safety, to the hospital eye service for further investigation. Patients should expect to be seen within thirteen weeks.
Preproliferative diabetic retinopathy
(Routine referral)
This means that changes were spotted on the images we assessed. The changes are seen as a finding that needs further investigation. We will refer the patient to the hospital eye service for further investigation. Patients should expect to be seen within thirteen weeks
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy
(Urgent referral)
This means that larger changes were spotted on the images we assessed The changes need prompt further Investigation. We will need to refer more quickly than normal as these changes could cause damage if not assessed by the hospital eye service. Patients should expect to be seen within six weeks.
