LGBT+ History Month
Posted or Updated on 8 Feb 2026
LGBT+ History Month is an annual event established by the Schools Out organisation in 2005. Its goal is to ensure that every LGBT+ person feels safe, seen, and able to thrive in educational settings and beyond. Through education and advocacy, they empower people in various learning environments to create spaces where all LGBT+ individuals feel supported and included.
It's an important time to celebrate LGBTQ+ culture, achievements, and current struggles while honouring the activism that has paved the way for progress over the years, such as the Stonewall Riots.
The accomplishments of LGBTQ+ figures are often overlooked in school curricula. In response, LGBT History Month aims to recognise the sacrifices made by the community.
The organisation promotes a comprehensive approach that increases the visibility of LGBT+ history and people in all their diversity. Each year, they set a specific theme and select five LGBT+ historical figures to highlight, providing free resources for educational institutions, organisations, and businesses. Through their social media channels, they showcase these five historical figures as well as LGBT+ individuals from the UK, both past and present, in alignment with the annual theme. Every day on their Instagram, they share stories of LGBT+ history from around the world. Check it out HERE.
