Recent Meningitis Outbreak Posted or Updated on 29 Mar 2026

We understand that many people may be concerned about the recent meningitis outbreak mentioned in the news.

The strain currently affecting Kent is Meningitis B (MenB). The overall risk of Meningitis B to individuals outside the Kent area remains low.

If you experience symptoms of meningitis, please call 999 or go to Accident & Emergency (A&E) immediately. If someone goes to bed feeling unwell with meningitis symptoms, remember to check on them regularly.

If you are a student at the University of Kent and are eligible for treatment but have since returned home, please contact your local GP for advice and to obtain the appropriate medication. If you have already been offered preventative antibiotics, it is strongly recommended that you take them promptly.
