Breast Cancer Awareness Posted or Updated on 1 Oct 2025

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

At the North Arden Primary Care Network (PCN), we love connecting with our community through various campaigns and awareness days that promote good health. This October, we’re excited to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness Month by focusing on raising awareness around breast cancer.

We believe that knowledge is power when it comes to preventing cancer. One of the best ways to catch any issues early is through cancer screening, which involves checking seemingly healthy individuals for any signs of disease. The earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances are for successful treatment.

Our goal this month is to help everyone become more aware of the key symptoms of breast cancer, such as unexpected changes in breast tissue or the presence of unusual lumps. We encourage you to chat with your doctor if you notice anything unusual or have any concerns—don’t hesitate! Remember, taking action early can make a big difference in health outcomes. We’re here to support you in every way we can on your health journey!

What is Breast Cancer?

Breast cancer is a disease characterized by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in the breast tissue, leading to the formation of a malignant tumor. This condition typically originates in the milk ducts, which are responsible for carrying milk from the lobules (where milk is produced) to the nipple. Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer in the UK and predominantly affects women, though men can also be diagnosed with the disease, albeit at a significantly lower rate. Each year, approximately 55,500 women and around 370 men receive a breast cancer diagnosis.

Statistically, one in seven women in the UK will develop breast cancer over the course of their lifetime, with the likelihood increasing as women age. Women aged 50 and above are particularly at a higher risk due to the natural changes in breast tissue over time.

Several risk factors can influence an individual's likelihood of developing breast cancer. These include genetic predispositions (such as mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes), family history of breast cancer, age at first menstruation and menopause, reproductive history, and lifestyle factors. For instance, women who are obese, smoke, or have a sedentary lifestyle may face an increased risk. Regular screening and awareness of the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can play a crucial role in early detection and successful treatment outcomes.
