Think Pharmacy
Posted or Updated on 3 Jun 2026
Are you suffering from a minor condition?
Are you struggling to get a GP appointment soon enough or at a time that suits you?
Securing a general practitioner (GP) appointment can be quite challenging for many individuals, largely due to the significant demand for these medical services. In response to this situation, the NHS encourages individuals experiencing minor illnesses to "Think Pharmacy." Local pharmacies offer a range of services that can assist with many common health issues, such as colds, allergies, and minor injuries.
Pharmacists are trained healthcare professionals who can provide advice, over-the-counter medications, and support for managing symptoms. Additionally, if your symptoms indicate a more serious condition that requires professional evaluation, pharmacists can guide you to the most appropriate healthcare service. This approach helps alleviate pressure on GP practices while ensuring that patients receive the necessary care promptly. Utilising your local pharmacy can be a convenient and effective way to address your health needs.
Pharmacies often have longer opening hours and frequently remain open on weekends and bank holidays, providing more opportunities for you to receive the care you need. By consulting a pharmacist for minor ailments, you can also help free up essential GP appointments for patients with more complex health conditions that require a doctor's expertise.
Pharmacists can now treat the following conditions without the need for a GP appointment:
- Earache (aged 1 to 17 years)
- Coughs, colds, sore throats
- Tummy Troubles
- Aches and Pains
- Impetigo (aged 1 year and over)
- Infected insect bites (aged 1 year and over)
- Shingles (aged 18 years and over)
- Sinusitis (aged 12 years and over)
- Sore throat (aged 5 years and over)
- Urinary tract infections or UTI’s (women aged 16 to 64 years)
Whilst many pharmacies are open across weekends and bank holidays, it's important to check before you go as opening hours may vary.
