What Is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a condition marked by elevated levels of blood sugar, known as glucose, which is a key energy source for the body. While the body produces some glucose, it also gets it from the foods we eat.

The pancreas releases insulin, a hormone that helps glucose enter the cells for energy. In diabetics, insulin production may be insufficient, entirely absent, or ineffective, leading to a buildup of glucose in the blood rather than allowing it to nourish the cells.

This condition heightens the risk for various health issues, affecting organs like the eyes, kidneys, nerves, and heart, and is also linked to a greater likelihood of certain types of cancer. Taking proactive measures to prevent or manage diabetes can significantly reduce the chances of developing related health complications.
