Dementia & Alzheimers

What is Dementia & Alzheimer’s?

Dementia encompasses a wide range of symptoms characterized by the decline in memory, language, problem-solving capabilities, and other cognitive functions to a degree that interferes with everyday activities. It is not a singular illness but a group of symptoms that can result from multiple underlying conditions, such as Alzheimer’s disease. The disorders classified under the term “dementia” arise from irregular changes occurring in the brain.

The signs of dementia can vary widely and may include difficulties with:

  • Short-term memory
  • Keeping track of personal items, such as a purse or wallet
  • Paying bills
  • Planning and preparing meals
  • Remembering appointments
  • Traveling outside of the neighbourhood

The signs of dementia develop progressively, meaning that cognitive decline starts slowly and steadily deteriorates over time, eventually resulting in dementia.
